Like other members of the squid family, southern calamari display a wide array of colours that can change rapidly from burnt orange to white with black bands and everything in between. It swims in small schools over reefs and seagrass beds. It has a short life span of about a year but in this time can grow up to 50 cm mantle length. Two of its ten arms are specialised for feeding. These are longer and equipped with extra rows of suckers and club-like ends. It has an internal feather-shaped skeleton with fins along the length of the mantle creating a diamond shape. It lays its eggs on the seafloor in fleshy white strings of 2-6 eggs per string.
