Grassy Flathead
Platycephalus laevigatus

¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨

The grassy or rock flathead has a long-ish, rounded body and a flattened triangular head. Its dark motley skin makes it well camouflaged in its preferred habitat - sheltered and moderately exposed seagrass and flat vegetated reefs. It has many southern relations including sand flatheads, yank flatheads and dusky flatheads. Unfortunately for this fish, it is considered the best of the flatheads for eating. It is an active predator and feeds on crustaceans, fish, squid, cuttlefish and sometimes algae.
