Old Wife
Enoplosus armatus

¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨

Adults are silver to brown with black vertical stripes along their bodies and two dorsal fins, the first of which carries a poisonous spine. Juveniles prefer the shelter of estuaries while adults are associated with seagrasses, rocky reefs and jetties where they swim in large schools, in pairs or alone. It is said that the Old Wife gets its name from the sound it makes when stressed. It is found around southern Australia and up into tropical waters.
