Spiny Gurnard
Lepidotrigla papilio

¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨
With its squarish head and wing-like pectoral fins the spiny gurnard is an unusual looking fish that spends most of its time on sandy seafloors - using its pectoral fins for walking and looking for prey. It lives in shallow estuaries, bays and sheltered coastal waters down to about 60 m depth and grows up to about 20 cm with a distribution from Perth around to eastern Victoria and Tasmania. It has a large, white-edged black spot on its dorsal fin and iridescent blue edging along the pectoral fins. Young spiny gurnards may have large blue and yellow spots on their pectoral fins as well.
