Sand Crab
Ovalipes australiensis

¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨

Also called the surf crab, this crab is quite common in shallow water off sandy beaches, and is found from Perth along the south coast and up to southern Queensland, including Tasmania in depths down to 34 m. Its shell is light grey or sandy brown with two dark red spots at the rear of the carapace and five 'teeth' on each side. It can grow up to 10.5 cm (carapace width). Like other swimmer crabs the last segment of the hind leg is flattened into a paddle which helps it to swim. When threatened it can rapidly burrow itself into the sand.
