Most people are familiar with the shape of the commercial scallop,
also called the King Scallop. It prefers sandy habitats and
lives down to 80 m depth, growing up to 15 cm long and living
for up to 15 years. It is widely distributed from Shark Bay
in WA to central Qld. Larvae drift in the plankton for up to
six weeks then briefly attach to a hard surface before moving
onto a soft sandy substrate where they grow into adults. A comic
sight is a 'swimming' scallop - when the animal clamps its two
shells together to create a jet of water, helping it flee from
danger.
