This creature crawls around on its stomach searching for luscious seaweeds to eat. Unlike the photographer Julian Finn, you may not have ever seen it quite like this.

  onmouseup="Swap15('d_label15','Itis an abalone. You are more likely to see an abalone from above, with its distinctive shell and row of respiratory pores. They have a muscular foot that enables them to clamp tightly onto rocky surfaces. The foot is surrounded by a mantle and epipodium, which is a sensory structure bearing tentacles. The epipodium varies in appearance from frilly, scalloped, smooth or pebbly. In this photo you can see the two eyes, but beyond lies a mouth with a razor sharp radula for scraping algae from rocks.')"

Clue: It's behaviour is linked to its common name! The photographer (Michael Marmach) found it under a rock at Portarlington at approx 11 am on the 11th of January 2009. The substrate is rocky reef, depth was 3 metres.

Clue: An abalone diver took this photo recently at Iron Prince Reef, Cape Howe, eastern Victoria. It was about 4 metres long and drifting along near the bottom.
